Security Manager
Reports to: Director of Facilities and IT

Position Overview:
The Security Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily security operations of the museum, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for visitors, staff, volunteers, collections, and facilities. This position leads the recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervision of a team of part-time security officers and works closely with the division director to develop and maintain policies, procedures, and operational standards. The Security Manager balances customer service with risk management, supporting the museum’s mission while safeguarding people, assets, and property.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Staff Leadership & Operations
- Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, and retain a high-performing team of part-time security personnel.
- Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for security staff.
- Develop and maintain weekly staffing schedules to ensure appropriate coverage for museum operating hours, special events, programs, and rentals.
- Coordinate shift assignments, time-off requests, and emergency coverage.
- Conduct regular staff meetings and training sessions to reinforce expectations, procedures, and customer service standards.
- Foster a team culture centered on professionalism, accountability, and hospitality.
Training and Compliance
- Work with VP of People and Culture, Crisis Team and Safety Team to implement orientation and ongoing training for all security personnel, including emergency response, de-escalation, incident reporting, and visitor interaction.
- Ensure staff are trained in applicable museum safety standards, life safety systems, and incident response protocols.
- Monitor compliance with all safety and security regulations and ensure documentation is maintained accurately.
- Conduct drills and preparedness exercises related to fire, evacuation, severe weather, and emergency incidents.
Policy Development and Administration
- Partner with leadership to develop, review, and update security policies, post orders, and standard operating procedures.
- Evaluate existing practices and recommend improvements to strengthen operational effectiveness and efficiency.
- Assist in implementing access control procedures, incident management processes, and emergency protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents, investigations, and daily activity logs.
- Prepare reports and summaries for leadership related to security operations and incidents.
Facility and Visitor Safety
- Oversee day-to-day building security, including access control, patrol routines, and alarm response.
- Serve as primary contact for security incidents and coordinate response with local emergency services when needed.
- Support security planning for exhibitions, collections movement, public programs, and special events.
- Collaborate with internal departments to ensure safety measures are integrated into operations and guest experience.
- Maintain awareness of risks related to collections, exhibitions, and public spaces and proactively address vulnerabilities.
Requirements / Qualifications

Qualifications and Work Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public safety, facilities management, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
- Minimum 3–5 years of supervisory experience in security, public safety, law enforcement, or related field.
- Experience managing part-time or shift-based teams preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to develop procedures, training programs, and operational standards.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm in emergencies.
- Excellent written communication and report-writing skills.
- Proficiency with scheduling software, incident reporting systems, and standard office applications.
- Availability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as operational needs require.
