This position is open for internal candidates among current Spokane Public Schools certificated and administrative employees, start date of July 1, 2026.

This position provides leadership to and is responsible for all district academic teaching and learning activities and services. Responsibilities include development, implementation, and maintenance of the best possible educational program and services for the students of the Spokane School District, including championing the district’s commitment to equity.

The Executive Director of Academic Services works to create authentic partnerships between district offices and schools that ensure closer alignment of district resources with school needs, to implement an instructional plan for the district that ensures effective teaching in every classroom, and to create conditions that ensure systemic improvement of practice over time. (The Executive Director of Academic Services reports to the Deputy Superintendent.)

SALARY: $145,499-$173,729 Experience increments depend on experience in the same or similar position. Promotion or transfer placements will be determined by percentage of increase and consideration of appropriate experience credit.

Responsibilities

1. Provide overall leadership and direction to the district regarding academics, instruction, assessment, and special programs.
2. Guide development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and services to meet the needs of diverse staff and students while operating with a lens of cultural proficiency, sensitivity, and equity to ensure students’ needs are met.
3. Lead the planning, facilitation, and implementation of large-scale curriculum adoptions across core content areas and instructional support programs, ensuring alignment to standards, district priorities, and high-quality instructional practices.
4. Oversee the development and expansion of graduation pathways and post-secondary credit opportunities, including dual-credit programming, to increase student access, completion, and readiness for college and career.
5. Provide strategic leadership for Career and Technical Education programming, cultivating workforce partnerships and ensuring industry alignment to support relevant, future focused learning experiences for students.
6. Coordinate the administration and evaluation of local, state, and national assessments in partnership with Assessment and Analytics Department, ensuring alignment with state standards, core curricula and using data to inform instructional improvement and system level decision-making.
7. Support the strategic alignment, allocation, and management of state and federal funds, including Title 1 and LAP, as well as grant-based funding, ensuring compliance, fiscal responsibility, and measurable impact on student achievement. Develop and coordinate educational services budgets.
8. Support the alignment of staffing models within special programs, including Special Education and English Language Development, to foster effective instruction, curriculum implementation and improved outcomes for all learners. Assist in the recruitment, selection, and assignment of a high quality, culturally competent and diverse instructional leadership staff, and evaluate the performance of academic teaching and learning directors, staff, as appropriate.
9. Interpret the programs, philosophy, and policies of the district to staff, students, and the community.
10. Attend board meetings as needed and prepare such reports for the board as the superintendent may request, and report on the status of district programs and services at the request of the superintendent or designee.
11. Prepare drafts of needed board policies and administrative rules for the superintendent's review and action.
12. Keep current and knowledgeable of developments in curriculum and instruction and provide leadership in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the district's educational program and assist in the determination of programs needed by the schools and make appropriate recommendations.
13. Communicate to the superintendent and/or designee the requirements and needs of the district as perceived by building administration and staff and serve as a resource to staff and community regarding educational issues.
14. Develop and maintain active participation with professional, civic, social, volunteer, and other community agencies and groups having an interest in the schools.
15. Establish necessary procedures for referral and cooperative planning with other "service to children" agencies, both local and state.
16. Play a leadership role in fostering professional growth and building staff morale throughout the district.
17. Provide leadership to ensure understanding of and promotion of the educational objectives of the district in accordance with the strategic plan and SPS Board Resolution 2020-11.
18. Recommend the addition of rigorous, relevant, and culturally responsive new courses and curricular materials; make recommendations for credit allowance for courses and graduation requirements.
19. Cultivate a commitment among all district staff to enable all students to achieve high standards.
20. Confront preconceptions and model open dialogue around race, culture, class and other issues of difference.
21. Assess the distribution of academic support with a clear racial equity lens, ensuring allocations provide the best resources to meet the needs of all SPS’s students, families, and schools equitably and effectively.
22. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as the superintendent and/or designee may assign.

Qualifications

1. Master's degree in educational administration or related field required.
2. Valid Washington State principal, program administrator, or superintendent credential required.
3. Demonstrated successful experience in a medium-to-large urban school district preferred.
4. Minimum of 10 years successful educational experience including at least 5 years administrative experience
5. Demonstrated successful central office leadership experience in teaching and learning, instruction, assessment and/or curriculum development required.
6. Demonstrated successful experience in developing and implementing successful systematic services related to student assessment, professional development, curriculum development and special programs.
7. Demonstrated successful experience in infusing culturally responsive materials and practices into instructional programs and services.
8. Demonstrated experience in development and administration of budgets and staffing allocations.
9. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the applicable laws, regulations, and emerging practices pertaining to assigned responsibilities to include knowledge of current issues and trends in assessment, curriculum, and instruction.
10. Demonstrated ability to provide positive, effective, and culturally competent leadership with others and to develop and accomplish personal and organizational goals.
11. Demonstrated ability to effectively represent the district and interact successfully with agencies, diverse groups, community groups, and the public.
12. Experience actively participating in collective bargaining and labor relations required.
13. Successful and demonstrated experience and skills in current technology being used in today's educational administration environment, to include a personal ability to use computer technologies for assessment, planning, budgeting, professional development, scheduling, and other management activities.
14. Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, schedule, and use resources; reach logical conclusions and make high quality decisions involving others appropriately in the decision-making processes; and act and accept responsibility for actions and consequences.
15. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form, using language that is appropriate to the person or group.
16. Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships and interact successfully with school district administrative, instructional support services staff, and labor representatives, including perceiving the needs and concerns of others; assisting others in resolving conflicts; motivating others; and designing programs to assist others in meeting organizational goals.
